Digital Twin System Architecture and Infrastructure Design
VIEW OUTPUTThis deliverable outlines the system architecture and infrastructure design of the GOTOTWIN digital twin platform, placing it in the wider context of renewable energy integration and cross-border collaboration in the Adriatic-Ionian region. The work addresses the key challenge of building a scalable, secure, and interoperable framework capable of linking heterogeneous Living Labs, enabling seamless data exchange, and supporting simulation, prediction, and decision-making for energy systems.
The technical blueprint is designed around principles of modularity, scalability, interoperability, and security. It leverages open-source technologies, cloud-native deployment practices, and established interoperability standards to ensure flexibility and long-term sustainability. Core components include data ingestion, digital twin synchronization, historical storage, visualization, and predictive services, all organized within a service-oriented architecture.
By establishing this robust foundation, the deliverable provides a solid technical basis for the next stages of platform implementation and integration across the region.
D2.1.2_Digital Twin System Architecture and Infrastructure Design
Initial digital twin platform planning workshop
VIEW OUTPUTThe GOTOTWIN workshop in Kozani brought together all partners to push forward WP2 activities on the digital twin platform for renewable energy systems in the Adriatic-Ionian region. The meeting emphasized strong collaboration and focused on both opportunities and challenges in connecting diverse infrastructures and technologies.
Participants updated the digital twin architecture, designed around WP1 requirements, which provides a modular and scalable framework. Built on a Kubernetes microservice approach, the platform is positioned to integrate renewable assets, sensors, and forecasts while supporting real-time monitoring, simulation, and predictive analytics. Smooth interoperability and coordination of AI/ML workflows for predictive maintenance and scenario forecasting were highlighted as essential.
The four Living Labs—INNOFEIT, SMART, IMP, and EPLL—showcased their unique strengths, from solar PV, storage, and EV chargers to SCADA-based energy flows and regional monitoring networks. Harmonizing these infrastructures will enable cross-site experimentation, predictive control, and advanced energy simulations across borders.
Discussions also stressed the value of combining high-quality energy measurements with meteorological and environmental data. Aligning sensor types and data streams is key to building reliable predictive models and optimizing energy production under real-world conditions. As next steps, the consortium agreed to finalize the digital twin architecture, integrate Living Lab data, develop virtual power plant models, and ensure cross-border interoperability, with iterative testing and flexibility guiding the process.

Workshop on identification of policy inconsistencies, barriers, and administrative burdens
VIEW OUTPUTDeliverable 4.1.1 reports on to the first GoToTWIN workshop, held on May 15–16, 2025, in Kozani, Greece. The workshop focused on the integration of digital twin technology into the renewable energy sector, under the theme “Advancing Renewable Energy in the Adriatic-Ionian Region through the Use of Digital Twins.” Organized within the framework WP4 entitled “Strategies and policies”,the event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including policymakers, academics, engineers, local government representatives, and energy professionals. It was hosted at the UOWM campus and also broadcasted via Teams with remote participants from North Macedonia and Serbia. This deliverable summarizes the 2-day event as follows:
- Day one focused on the design and planning of the digital twin platform, including the selection of appropriate technologies, assessment of infrastructure needs (software and hardware), and the formulation of an implementation roadmap.
- Day two examined the broader policy landscape, highlighting legal and regulatory challenges faced by participating countries. Key issues discussed included cybersecurity, interoperability, data ownership, and stakeholder involvement. Presentations and roundtable discussions underlined the importance of regulatory harmonization, strong cybersecurity measures, and inclusive, transparent policymaking.
